Childminders

Childminders have to be registered with CIW and can offer full day care for your child, usually with opening times to suit working parents. Childminders may offer flexible sessions with shorter or longer opening hours and will often drop off and collect children attending a nursery or a school.

Cylchoedd Meithrin

Cylchoedd Meithrin are Welsh medium playgroups usually available to children from 2 or 2 and a half years to 5 years of age. Cylchoedd Meithrin provide sessional childcare usually for 2 or 3 hours in either the morning or the afternoon and mainly during term time.

Many are registered with CIW and some offer nursery wraparound provision, where children are collected from or taken to their nursery school/class.

Full Day Care

Gofal Plant Yr Enfys has recently opened on the site of Ysgol Gymraeg Gwynllyw and provides Welsh medium childcare for 0-5 year olds. This includes Flying Start provision for 12.5 hours a week, sessional and full day care for 0-3 years olds and wraparound childcare for 3-5year olds. Gofal Plant Yr Enfys also particate in the Welsh Government Childcare Offer and Tax Free Childcare.

Gofal Teg has recently opened within the school grounds of Ysgol Panteg and provides Welsh medium childcare for 2 – 11 year olds. This includes full day care and half day sessions for 2 – 4 year olds, wraparound childcare for 3-4 year olds and out of school provision for 4 – 11 year olds.

Welsh medium nursery education for your 3 or 4 year old

Nursery schools and registered nursery education providers offer free part time early years education for 3 and 4 year olds, funded by the Local Authority. For more information on Nursery education funding in Torfaen generally, visit our nursery education page. Nursery provision is part time.

Welsh medium nursery education is provided by all of the Welsh medium primary schools in Torfaen and by some childcare settings that have been approved by the Local Authority and Estyn.

Welsh medium primary school education

Children can transfer to a Welsh medium primary school from an English medium nursery and parents do not have to be Welsh speakers in order for their children to join a Welsh medium school. Welsh medium out of school care

Welsh medium out of school childcare in Torfaen is provided by childminders, breakfast clubs, before school clubs and after school clubs and is available to primary school aged children. Please note that some before and after school clubs run less than two hours, therefore they do not have to register with CIW.
