Childminders work in their own homes, providing childcare for babies and children of various ages and can therefore care for siblings together. They are self employed and set their own fees and opening hours. Some childminders offer term time only contracts, early or late opening hours for parents/carers who work shifts or atypical hours.
Childminders in Wales must be registered and inspected by the CIW and depending on their registration can care for up to 6 children at the same time. Many childminders will provide before and after school childcare for school aged children.
