Nursery Education

A free part time nursery education place is available for 3 and 4 year old children in Torfaen. The earliest a child can receive funding is from the term after their 3rd birthday. Nursery education funded places in Torfaen are allocated on a part-time basis (morning or afternoon sessions only) for five days per week. In certain limited circumstances, full time placements may be offered to four year olds.

Children can attend a nursery class within a school or a childcare setting that is an approved nursery education provider (these may include playgroups, cylchoedd meithrin or day nurseries)

The Local Authority provides funding for nursery education places in approved childcare settings up to the equivalent cost of providing a nursery education place within a school – currently £447 per term (as at 2019/20). Parents and carers are responsible for any costs of the childcare place above this funding.

Parent / Carers should receive an application form in the post in the September before their child’s third birthday. If you have not received an application form by the end of September of that year, contact the Admissions team on 01495 766915.

Parent/Carers will be notified of the outcome of their application via the admissions team for which they applied.

Torfaen Family Information Service can provide details of local nursery education provision in schools or approved childcare settings. Freephone 0800 0196 330 or email fis@torfaen.gov.uk
