    Cylchoedd ti a fi are small friendly groups to take your newborns to pre-school aged children to and gives you the opportunity to meet other adults. Activities at the cylch ti a fi reinforce the use of the Welsh language at home and give non Welsh speaking families the opportunity to use Welsh for the first time with their children.

    Welsh medium childcare for pre-school children (0-4 years)
    Welsh medium childcare for pre-school children in Torfaen is currently available through childminders, cylchoedd meithrin, 1 day nursery and 1 billingual day nursery. For information on help with childcare costs click here.

    Childminders have to be registered with CSSIW and can offer full day care for your child, usually with opening times to suit working parents. Childminders may offer flexible sessions with shorter or longer opening hours and will often drop off and collect children attending a nursery or a school. Welsh medium childminders in Torfaen are:

    Cylchoedd Meithrin are Welsh medium playgroups usually available to children from 2 or 2 and a half years to 5 years of age. Cylchoedd meithrin provide sessional childcare usually for 2 or 3 hours in either the morning or the afternoon and mainly during term time.

    Many are registered with CSSIW and some offer nursery wraparound provision, where children are collected from or taken to their nursery school/class. Cylchoedd meithrin in Torfaen are:

    Meithrinfa Pontnewydd is a Welsh medium day nursery that provides care for children aged 0 - 5 years. They are also registered as an Early Years Education Provider.Torfaen County Borough Council can fund 4/5 days per week or 3 full days (term time only). Where a child attends a private nursery, parents will be responsible for any additional payment over and above the funding allocated by Torfaen.

    Welsh medium nursery education for your 3 or 4 year old
    Nursery schools and registered nursery education providers offer free part time early years education for 3 and 4 year olds, funded by the Local Authority. If you require Welsh medium childcare to extend the time that your child is cared for, childminders and cylchoedd meithrin sometimes provide a nursery wraparound service (see details above).

      Welsh medium primary school education
      There are three Welsh medium primary schools in Torfaen. In response to the growing demand for Welsh medium education, a new Welsh medium primary school was recently opened in Griffithstown and a new nursery unit was opened in Varteg.

      Children can transfer to a Welsh medium primary school from an English medium nursery and parents do not have to be Welsh speakers in order for their children to join a Welsh medium school.       Welsh medium before and after school childcare
      Welsh medium out of school childcare in Torfaen is provided by childminders, breakfast clubs, before school clubs and after school clubs and is available to primary school aged children.       Welsh Medium Holiday Childcare
      There are currently no Welsh medium holiday clubs in Torfaen. Childminders operate all year and may be able to care for your school aged child during school holidays. Torfaen Childcare Team will be surveying residents this year regarding Welsh medium holiday childcare.
